Principal's Message
Greetings:
At Mott Hall High School Harlem, we teach the whole person - we challenge and inspire our young people to use their minds well by engrossing them in knowledge and teaching them skills that are relevant, expanding their understanding of the world through experiences that engage and excite their curiosity. We also support their emotional well-being and foster its development, enmeshing them in a culture of belonging. Every student is part of a class called Crew, led by a Crew leader, who shephards no more than fifteen students through the intense academic and social demands of high school.
With new leadership from myself and Assistant Principal Kendra Brathwaite, Mott Hall students have embarked on a journey of success with 86% of students graduating on time in 2022 and 60% admitted into four-year colleges. This year, 89% of students have graduated on time and 95% of them have been admitted into four-year or two-year colleges. We simply refuse to leave students behind regardless of the obstacles they contend with. Our staff are trauma informed and responsive so we all, including administration, make ourselves available to students who need to be heard and to heal. We believe that when a school supports every student’s success, every student enjoys the greatest success possible.
That’s because building a healthy community is a core value, and we build it, in part, through collaborating with partner’s like Harlem School of the Arts and Classical Theatre of Harlem, who provide dance and theater instruction utilizing our brand new 1,600 square foot dance studio. Next year, students will learn coding in our brand new computer lab. To prepare our students for college, they take AP English, AP Psychology, AP Spanish and College Now. Students work with three highly trained college counselors who offer the individualized attention needed to navigate the college application process. Our graduates attend Morgan State, Baruch College, City College, SUNY Buffalo, Alfred State, UMass Amherst, Hunter College, and many others.
We are immensely proud to serve in Harlem, which is a neighborhood of eminence. We draw upon its tradition of greatness to realize a vision of excellence, remaining committed to values of self-awareness and social justice in the way we care for and teach young people. Please contact our parent coordinator, Herminia Saldana, by calling 212 694 6020 ext. 4081 so we can schedule a school visit and get to know one another. We would be honored to be entrusted with educating your young person.
Best regards,
Doug Geogerian
